Arts Etobicoke: ROM South Asian History Workshop | The “Art” of Ornament in South Asia

What is ornamentation, and how does it differ from “art”? What stories do decorative patterns on weapons, textiles, and everyday objects tell us about the cultures that created them?
In this hands-on drawing workshop, led by the ROM Coordinator of South Asian Community Engagement, as part of the ROM South Asian History Workshop Series with Arts Etobicoke, explore the intricate world of South Asian ornamentation. Using objects from the ROM collection as inspiration, participants will learn about the meanings behind various decorative motifs and engage in guided drawing exercises to deconstruct and reimagine these designs.
Whether you're an artist, a history enthusiast, or simply curious, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with the beauty and symbolism of ornamentation—past and present.
