Arts Etobicoke: ROM South Asian History Workshop | Embroidery and Bollywood

Join Arts Etobicoke for this one-hour talk that explores the role of textiles in Bollywood cinema, focusing on how costume design showcases meaning through colour, fabric, and embroidery, as part of the ROM South Asian History Workshop Series. From symbolic uses of colour to regionally specific textile techniques, Bollywood films have long used textiles to highlight personal characteristics or hint at narrative meaning. The lecture examines how these visual choices are not only artistic decisions but also carry greater meaning that contributes to a film’s overall impact.
Participants will gain insight into the connections between film, fashion, and industry, and will be invited to reflect on how cinema can shape and reflect cultural identities through textile design.
